By Matt Yanofsky: I had the opportunity to catch up with an interesting boxing figure by the name of Mitchell Rose. Rose, a former Golden Gloves champion became the buzz of boxing following his shocking stoppage win over boxing cult phenomenon Butterbean. Rose is currently selling his book titled The Man That Beat Butterbean Now Has To Beat These City Streets..
MY: Mitchell what’s going on? I’ve seen you at the fights with your new book can you tell me about it?
MR: The book is about my life and some of the things I endured growing up in Brooklyn. It talks about the Highlight of my life which was knocking out Butterbean which earned me a lot of respect.
MY: The boxing world became familiar with you after stopping a then undefeated Butterbean. Do you still enjoy hearing about that or are you over the moment?
MR: It is still an exciting thing 11 years later because I still get love from the fans and respect as well. I have moved on in life but it will forever be a great moment.
MY: How long did it take you to write the book?
MR: A little over two years
MY: Aside from Butterbean, you had a famous street fight with Mike Tyson which led to a lawsuit. Can you tell us about that?
MR: I was hanging out at a club called Sugar Hill in Brooklyn when I saw Mike and approached him. I shook his hand, started talking to him, and then we drank a little bit. As we were leaving the club, I made a comment to Mike which upset him because I asked him to be careful with the women he was with. Mike charged at me and attacked me. We got into a wrestling match and luckily, I slipped out his ferocious grip but ended up tumbling on the ground, severely injuring my elbow.
MY: Thanks for your time do you have any thoughts in closing?
MR: Although my career was not as successful as it could have been, I still enjoyed it. I loved the moment of beating up Butterbean in front of 20,000 people at Madison Square Garden. I also like how Tyson tried to knock me out but couldn’t! The Tyson debacle did lead to great publicity.
