18.09.07 – Scott Lawton today received the support of Stoke City FC ahead of his 12 round lightweight boxing clash with British boxing’s young gun Amir Khan. Werrington’s Lawton aims to become the first man to beat Khan in the pro ranks when the pair meet at Nottingham’s Ice Arena on 6th October.
Lawton was introduced to the crowd during the half time interval at tonight’s Coca Cola Championship game between The Potters and Barnsley where he received a warm reception. Striker Mamady Sidibe presented Scott with a team shirt as a good luck token and offered the boxer his own personal best wishes.
Defender Carl Dickinson, midfielder John Eustace and the goalkeeping duo of Steve Simonsen and Russell Holt all said that they were confident that Lawton would get the better of Khan.
Afterwards, Stoke City Manager, Tony Pulis said: “Scott Lawton is a great example to all sportsmen. Many players could learn a lot from him. You can’t help but admire his dedication and determination and he thoroughly deserves his chance.”
“I’ve no doubt that he will give Amir Khan a run for his money and I for one will be rooting for him to win; I know a lot of the team are behind him too.”
Many fans also took the opportunity, both during and after the match, to give Scott their own personal messages of support. The popular boxer commented: “I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by the support that I’ve had from people over the last few weeks. People have been stopping me in the streets to wish me luck and tonight it’s been very humbling to have so many people want to wish me luck. It’s up to me to make sure that I don’t let them down on 6th October.”
Lawton added: “Training is going really well now and I’ll be ready for Amir when the fight comes. I just want to get in the ring now and do all my supporters proud.”
