25.04.07 – By James Slater: “Fast” Eddie chambers is a young and unbeaten heavyweight. Currently in possession of a 28-0 (16) record, the exciting fighter is taking it up a notch quality-wise in his next outing. Facing the experienced Dominick Guinn, a man who has never been stopped, Eddie will box in Las Vegas for the first time. In the middle of training for the Guinn bout, Chambers very kindly took time out to speak with this writer. Here is what he had to say.
James Slater: Firstly, Eddie, how are preparations going for the Guinn Fight?
Eddie Chambers: Pretty good. I’ve been training hard, I’ve had good sparring. I’ve been working with Fres Oquendo.
J.S: I spoke with Dominick earlier and he gives you an A+ as a fighter. How do you rate him?
E.C: Oh, I give him a high grade. He’s back on the upswing now, after a couple of bad fights. He’s technically sound, he has speed and a good chin. He doesn’t really move that much, but he makes up for it in other areas. I’ve prepared well for him.
J.S: He’s never been stopped, or even put down. Would you like to become the first to KO him?
E.C: Of course. Everyone wants to become the first to do something. But I don’t really want to get caught up in that. The most important thing is that I get the win.
J.S: Do you think he is the most experienced fighter you will have faced so far?
E.C: I’ve fought older guys, but he’s probably the best and most experienced, yes. In as much as he’s got a career and wants to accomplish things himself still.
J.S: Have you watched tapes of him?
E.C: Actually, it’s funny. I’ve also watched his fights on T.V, not just on tape. I’ve watched him fight quite a few times.
J.S: What type of fight do you think it will be on the 4th?
E.C: It should be a pretty exciting fight. I’m gonna box and throw a lot of punches. It should be a pleasing fight for the fans. There will be times when it’s a chess match, too.
J.S: A lot of people expect you to really go places. Do you feel pressure on you?
E.C: Any time you want to accomplish anything there is some pressure on you. You feel it, but that just goes with the territory. You have to handle it. I take the sweet with the sour. I’m not a boastful person, I just go in there and do my job, that’s all. I don’t ever want to say anything dumb, you know?
J.S: What fight has been your toughest one so far?
E.C: The last one (laughs) [ a seven round TKO win over Derrick Rossy] He came at me, he was big and strong. Definitely the last fight was a tough one.
J.S: Your fight with Guinn is on a big stage in Las Vegas, the night before the mega De La Hoya-Mayweather fight. Are you looking forward to the big exposure?
E.C: Yes, it will be great exposure for me. My team has done a great job getting me this fight. It’s a great position to be in with all the media attention. I’ve fought in Reno before but never Vegas. I’m looking forward to it.
J.S: What kind of shape do you think the heavyweight division is in right now?
E.C: I think it’s in pretty good shape. I think there’s a good crop of fighters coming up from different countries. Pretty soon we might have another four belt holders from the U.S, you never know. I think boxing is in good shape right now.
J.S: What would be your ultimate dream fight down the road?
E.C: Any title fight would be my dream fight. Whoever it is against at the time, winning a belt is one of my dreams.
J.S: I appreciate your time. For my final question, do you have any prediction for May4th?
E.C: I’m gonna win, either by unanimous decision or by a KO. But really it doesn’t matter how I win. Whatever it takes.
