Ortiz reflects on 2011 fights and rates Berto above Mayweather as his hardest test

Victor Ortiz says Andre Berto, not Floyd Mayweather, was the toughest opponent of his career. The former champion pointed to Berto’s power and resilience when reflecting on his 2011 fights.

Ortiz lost to Mayweather in September 2011 when their WBC welterweight title fight ended in the fourth round after a chaotic sequence. Referee Joe Cortez deducted a point from Ortiz for a headbutt. Seconds later, as Ortiz tried to apologize and the action restarted, Mayweather landed a left hook and right hand that ended the fight.

That finish has been debated ever since, but Ortiz made clear in an interview this week that he rates Berto higher as a complete fighter.

“He is not the best opponent I’ve faced. Hands down not. The best opponent that I faced was Andre Berto,” Ortiz said to talkSport Boxing.

Ortiz praised Berto’s power, recovery, and all-around ability while comparing him to Mayweather’s style-heavy approach.

“This man showed everything: quality, heart, skill. You name it, he’s got it,” Ortiz said of Berto. “He’s got power in both hands.”

Ortiz and Andre Berto fought in April 2011 in one of the better action fights of that period. Ortiz won a unanimous decision, handing Berto his first defeat and taking the WBC welterweight title. Both men were dropped during a dramatic back-and-forth battle that raised Ortiz’s profile heading into the Mayweather fight.

The comments are less about rewriting history than showing what fighters value once their careers settle. Public fame and technical greatness do not always equal the hardest night in the ring. Sometimes, the man who made you fight every second gets more respect than the superstar who beat you clean.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. remains the bigger name. Ortiz’s answer suggests Berto left the deeper mark.
