Terence Crawford Rematch Still on Canelo Alvarez’s Mind

Canelo says he hopes Crawford returns for another fight after the unbeaten former champion retired following their historic 2025 showdown

Canelo Alvarez says he still wants a rematch with Terence Crawford despite Crawford remaining retired after their historic fight last December. The Mexican star said he hopes Crawford returns for another showdown after handing Canelo one of the biggest defeats of his career.

“I don’t know [if he will return], I am not in his shoes. I know [Turki Alalshikh wants to see it] and I hope that fight happens again. That is what I hope.

“I think, it will be amazing for fans too, right? For everybody, it is a big fight. I hope that fight happens again and I get my rematch,” Canelo said to Ring Magazine.

Crawford retired at 38 after beating Canelo in one of the biggest results of 2025. The victory pushed his record to 42-0 and put him alongside Henry Armstrong as a three-division undisputed champion.

After the fight, Crawford said he had no interest in staying at super middleweight or dropping back down to middleweight to continue chasing titles. Instead, he chose to walk away from the sport unbeaten.

Canelo still sounds interested in revisiting the fight if Crawford changes his mind.

“I am not going to wait for anybody. I have my plans already,” said Canelo.

Canelo undergoes a major test on September 12 in Saudi Arabia when he faces undefeated WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli. The fight will be Canelo’s first appearance since left elbow surgery last October, and Mbilli’s nonstop pressure style could quickly reveal how much the 35-year-old still has left physically after a long layoff.

Canelo’s comments about Crawford also arrive at an important time in his career. A strong performance against Mbilli would immediately revive interest in a second fight with Crawford, especially after Turki Alalshikh publicly backed the idea of a rematch between the two stars.
