Chris Mannix Explains DAZN’s Welterweight Master Plan

The veteran broadcaster believes Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney could headline a series of major fights under one platform.

Chris Mannix believes DAZN’s deal with Teofimo Lopez is about far more than one fighter. He says the platform is trying to assemble Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney and Lopez to deliver several of boxing’s biggest welterweight fights over the next two years.

“If Teofimo wins on August 22nd, Ryan Garcia, win or lose, probably gets Teofimo after that,” Mannix said on his channel. “All of a sudden you’ve got another big unification fight in the weight class.”

Mannix also believes Haney is a priority for DAZN. Bringing Haney onto the platform would place three of the sport’s biggest names under the same umbrella.

“If you have Garcia, Haney, Lopez, you’ve got three guys that are really talented that don’t like each other very much and could make pretty good fights over the next two years,” Mannix said. “If you can get them all on the same page making these fights, who wouldn’t want to see a round robin with Teofimo, Ryan, and Devin Haney?”

Mannix views Teofimo’s deal as the first step in that plan. He also believes similar agreements between networks and established fighters may become more common as broadcasters compete for boxing’s biggest attractions instead of relying on traditional promotional contracts.

If DAZN succeeds in bringing Ryan, Haney, plus Teofimo together, the network would control several of the most lucrative fights available at welterweight.
