Shawn Porter Sees Ryan Garcia’s Speed Creating Problems For Conor Benn

Porter says Garcia’s speed and punching power would create major problems for Benn at welterweight

Shawn Porter believes Ryan Garcia would enter a possible welterweight fight against Conor Benn as the favorite. Porter said Garcia’s speed and punching power from the outside would make the matchup difficult for Benn despite his toughness and versatility.

The fight has become increasingly realistic after Benn stayed active at a 150-pound catchweight with a decision win over Regis Prograis last month. Benn is still positioned near the top of the WBC rankings at welterweight, where Garcia currently holds the title after defeating Mario Barrios earlier this year.

Garcia’s victory over Barrios helped steady his career after a turbulent stretch that included a no-contest against Devin Haney and a loss to Rolando Romero.

Porter, who previously sparred several rounds with Benn, said Garcia’s speed and power could become difficult problems for the British contender.

“Based on how Ryan Garcia looked in his last fight, it looks like he beats Conor Benn,” said Porter to Boxing King Media.

“The style clash favors Ryan Garcia because of his speed, because of his power from the outside, so it’s definitely a tough fight for Conor Benn.

“I would say 60/40 Ryan Garcia wins that fight, possibly by KO. But Conor is very tough. That’s what I already knew about him, but I got to see it first-hand when we sparred.”

The Evolution of Benn

Porter also believes Benn showed more dimensions in his rematch victory over Chris Eubank Jr. than many fans expected after their first fight.

“He’s much more versatile than what we saw in the first fight with Eubank.

“He comes back in the rematch against Eubank, and we see the versatility, we see the speed, the foot movement, and things of that nature.

“Those were the things I saw when I sparred him for four easy rounds,” Porter said.

A Garcia-Benn fight would likely attract major attention because of the aggressive styles both fighters bring into the ring, along with the controversy that has surrounded parts of both careers over the last two years.
