Shakur Stevenson Says Devin Haney Fight Now Awaits His Approval

Stevenson says he has already accepted the proposed 144-pound October bout and insists the next move belongs to Haney’s camp

Shakur Stevenson says he has already agreed to face Devin Haney in a proposed 144-pound catchweight fight and has informed Zuffa Boxing to finalize his side of the deal. Stevenson now says the long-discussed October showdown depends on Haney accepting the terms.

“I definitely verbally agreed that we’re going to be fighting in October, and I told them to put my part down,” said Shakur to the AH show.

The comments back up what Shakur posted earlier this week after Bill Haney challenged him to sign the 144-pound agreement. Shakur insisted then that his side was already finished, and he repeated that position during the interview.

Shakur said the negotiations began after Haney and his father repeatedly mentioned his name following his loss to Teofimo Lopez. Rather than continue trading words online, he says he’s ready to settle things in the ring.

“After my fight with Teo, I wasn’t speaking on Devin. I didn’t bring up Devin. Him and Bill constantly had mentioned me. And when they constantly mentioned me, I was chilling. I was minding my business. Now it’s like, y’all want to fight me, I’ll fight y’all.”

Shakur also explained why the proposed bout is set for a 144-pound catchweight instead of the full welterweight limit.

“I’m not a 47-pounder. I just came up from 135 to 140. So if I’m going to move up to make the fight fair, I feel like he should be able to move three pounds down since he just fought Jose Ramirez at 144 with no problem,” said Shakur about wanting a weight handicap for the fight with Haney.

With Shakur saying he has already given his approval, attention now shifts to Haney’s camp. If Haney agrees to the terms, one of boxing’s most anticipated matchups could headline Zuffa Boxing’s October schedule.
