Anthony Olascuaga defends WBO title as organizers pursue attendance mark
A boxing event in San Francisco on July 11 is aiming to set a new attendance record. Organizers are targeting a crowd larger than the reported 135,132 mark set in 1941.
The card at Civic Center Plaza will be headlined by Anthony Olascuaga defending his WBO flyweight title against Andy Dominguez.
Promoter Ed Pereira said the event is designed as a major public spectacle for the city.
“This will be a show like the boxing world has never seen before,” Pereira said. “San Francisco has always been a city that stands for something special, and on July 11, it will stand at the center of the boxing world.”
The current attendance record is credited to Tony Zale vs. Billy Pryor at Juneau Park in Milwaukee in 1941.
The July 11 card will also feature:
Vito Mielnicki Jr. vs. Gerardo Luis Vergara
Charly Suarez vs. Manuel Avila
Gurgen Hovhannisyan vs. Uila Mauʻu
Veteran promoter Sampson Lewkowicz is attached to the project alongside Pereira, while Hall of Fame fighter Christy Martin is also supporting the event.
“When he came to me with this event, I saw immediately what it could be,” Lewkowicz said. “This is not just a fight card, this is a statement.”
The event is expected to stream live on YouTube, with additional announcements planned in the coming weeks.
