Torrez believes doubters will dismiss either outcome of the postponed IBF heavyweight eliminator once the fight finally happens

Richard Torrez Jr says criticism is guaranteed no matter what happens when he faces Frank Sanchez in their IBF heavyweight eliminator. The unbeaten heavyweight believes fans already have excuses prepared for either outcome before the two contenders finally meet in Egypt.

“If I beat Frank Sanchez, then, ‘Oh, he was already too old. His knee injuries, he was never too good.’ If Frank beats me, then, ‘Oh, Richard Torrez was always just a hype job. He never had anything to do. It was luck,'” said Torrez Jr. to Xicana Boxing, talking about his fight this Saturday.

“You know, there always going to be negative things to say about fighters. And there’s one quote that I really like where it’s not the critic who matters, you know.”

Torrez later admitted he has stopped worrying about trying to convince doubters that he belongs among the heavyweight division’s top prospects.

“I’m done trying to prove to people if I’m a good boxer or not. Right now, it’s for me. I want to see how far I can go, you know? So, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to go out there. I’m going to try to fight the best fighters I can,” said Torrez Jr.

“I don’t know if I care about the glory too much. I don’t know if I care about the fame. I don’t even know if I care about the money too much. I just want to go out there and see what I can do.”

Heavyweight prospects are often judged harshly because one bad performance can dramatically change public perception in the division.

Torrez faces Sanchez on Saturday at the Pyramids of Giza on the Oleksandr Usyk-Rico Verhoeven card on DAZN PPV. Sanchez has not fought since February 2025.
