De La Hoya reacts after David Benavidez stops Gilberto Ramirez to claim WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts in Las Vegas
Oscar De La Hoya praised David Benavidez after his sixth-round stoppage win over Gilberto Ramirez in Las Vegas. Benavidez claimed the WBA and WBO cruiserweight belts in his first fight at 200 pounds.
Benavidez moved up to cruiserweight and stopped Ramirez to win the WBA and WBO titles, showing his power carried up in weight. The fight was halted late in the sixth after sustained punishment, with Ramirez unable to continue under the referee’s watch.
De La Hoya, who promotes Ramirez, watched from ringside and acknowledged the performance.
“Beautiful. The buzzsaw of Benavidez, punches in bunches, and the only shot that Zurdo had was to throw a punch right in the center. The speed was too much, Benavidez was too much, The Monster is here for a long time. Very proud of him,” said De La Hoya to Fight Hub TV.
Benavidez’s hand speed and output separated the two fighters early, and Ramirez struggled to keep pace once he was forced onto the back foot. The pressure built through the middle rounds, leaving Ramirez absorbing clean shots without a sustained response.
De La Hoya also addressed what could come next.
“He’s got many options. I think right now he is the man at that weight class. Whoever is going to fight him has to wait in line…Benavidez right now is the man.”
A move back to light heavyweight has been discussed, where Benavidez still holds a world title. A fight with Dmitry Bivol has been mentioned, though Bivol is scheduled to face Michael Eifert later this month.
