Naseem Hamed Predicts Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua Draw

Former champion questions Fury’s recent form as talk of long-awaited heavyweight clash builds

Naseem Hamed says a Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua fight could end in a draw if the two finally meet. The former champion pointed to Fury’s recent performances as a reason the outcome is harder to call.

Talk of a Fury-Joshua showdown has increased after Fury returned earlier this month with a decision win over Arslanbek Makhmudov. The victory marked Fury’s first bout back and moved attention straight back to a fight many expected years ago.

Joshua, however, has said he would prefer a return bout first. He is expected to fight in July before a possible meeting with Fury later in the year, with November widely discussed as a target.

Hamed said the matchup is harder to call now than it once seemed and pointed to changes in Fury’s recent form.

“Who do I think is going to win the fight between AJ and Fury? Well, that is the question, and everybody wants to know that,” said Hamed to talkSport Boxing.

“Years and years ago, Tyson for me had this awkward style where he could make AJ look silly, that’s the truth. Things have changed now. Tyson has seemed to drop back a little bit.”

Hamed also said Fury still has the ability to produce top-level performances on the right night, even if he was not fully convinced by parts of the Makhmudov fight.

“But you never know with Tyson Fury, maybe one night he can turn up and box amazingly and do what he did to Wilder. Those first few rounds [against Makhmudov], I was a little bit disappointed that he didn’t go from the get-go.”

The former featherweight star then gave his own surprise prediction for the contest.

“This is going to sound mad to you, but would it be unbelievable if I were to say that it could be a draw?” said Naseem on the Fury vs. Joshua fight.

No fight has been officially announced, but both men remain linked to what would be one of the biggest all-British heavyweight events in recent memory. Any summer tune-up for Joshua, and any next move from Fury, should help determine whether the long-discussed fight finally reaches the ring.
