Sulaiman says new venture’s aggressive approach created conflict despite potential benefits for fighters
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has criticized the way Zuffa Boxing entered the sport, calling its approach aggressive. He said competition is welcome but questioned the tone used by the new venture.
Sulaiman said the issue is not competition itself, but the tone used while entering an already established sport. He said a well-funded new player with a major platform could help boxing, but claimed the rollout was handled the wrong way.
“They’re coming in so aggressively and so arrogant,” said Sulaiman to Ring Champions about Zuffa Boxing.
By labeling their approach “arrogant,” Sulaiman is drawing a line in the sand, signaling that while the WBC is open to new money, they won’t be bullied out of their own sport.
Sulaiman said Zuffa Boxing would have been better received if it had presented itself as another option for fighters and fans rather than attacking promoters, sanctioning bodies and the existing structure.
“Had they come in and said, ‘Look, this is going to be an option for boxing. We’re going to do our thing.’ Why get into the aggressiveness of blaming the promoters, blaming the organizations, blaming everybody else?”
He also pointed to his own experience during the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford event in Las Vegas, where he said boxing figures were treated poorly while MMA media received better access.
“It was one of the most horrible experiences I ever had,” said Sulaiman.
Despite the criticism, Sulaiman did not close the door on Zuffa’s future role in the sport. He said strong promotion, television backing, and investment can still benefit fighters if handled properly.
“With so much money, with a great platform like Paramount, they could do good for boxing,” Mauricio said about Zuffa.
The comments show that resistance to Zuffa Boxing may be less about competition and more about whether the new company wants to work inside boxing or bulldoze through it.
