#2 WBC John Jackson’s chin betrayed him once again with him getting stopped in the 8th round by #1 WBC Jermell Charlo (28-0, 13 KOs) on Saturday night in their fight for the vacant WBC light middleweight title at the Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC) in Las Vegas. Jackson was in control of the fighting going into the 8th round.
Unfortunately for Jackson, Charlo hurt him with a solid right hand to the head followed by a powerful left hook that knocked him unconcious and left him hanging partially over the ring ropes. Referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight immediately to render assistance to the badly hurt Jackson. Th fight was stopped at at 0:51 of the round. Jackson was knocked out in the 5th round by Andy Lee in 2014 in a fight where he was in command. Like tonight’s knockout, it was a really bad one for Jackson.
Jackson was getting the better of Charlo before the knockout. He was able to hit Charlo with his fast shots, and get out of the way of his return fire by using movement. Jackson was making Charlo look like a really limited fighter until the knockout.
Charlo is now the new WBC 154lb champion now that he’s beaten Jackson. The title that Charlo won tonight is Floyd Mayweather’s old belt. With the way Charlo fought tonight, which was mostly poor, it would be impossible for him to have beaten Mayweather for it. Charlo would have been schooled and the boxing fans would have been bored. Charlo looked very clueless against Jackson. If not for Jackson have a chin problem, he would have easily won the fight. It’s going to be interesting to see how long Charlo can hold onto his WBC title. #3 WBC contender is Demetrius Andrade, and he would figure to be a very tough opponent for Charlo to deal with.
