Former two-division champion says he wants another fight before the end of the year before challenging WBA super middleweight champion Jaime Munguia
Jermall Charlo already has his next major target in mind before returning to the ring. The unbeaten former two-division champion says he wants to challenge WBA super middleweight champion Jaime Munguia after facing Koen Mazoudier and plans to stay active through the end of the year.
“Let’s get done with this fight in July and then I will try to fight before the end of the year to give you another fight,” Charlo told FightHype.
“Then I want to go and fight Munguia. Munguia sounds like a good fight.”
Charlo, 36, returns on the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Tim Tszyu undercard after nearly 14 months out of the ring. His last appearance came in May 2025 when he stopped Thomas LaManna, a victory that was expected to lead to a showdown with Caleb Plant. Those plans unraveled when Armando Resendiz upset Plant in the main event.
Resendiz was later elevated to WBA super middleweight champion but lost the title in his first defense to Munguia, leaving the Mexican as the belt holder. Charlo now wants to challenge.
Before any title opportunity can materialize, Charlo must get past Australia’s Mazoudier. A victory would put him in a position to pursue another fight before the end of 2026 and potentially set up a clash with Munguia as he attempts to become a three-division world champion.
Munguia would represent Charlo’s first world title opportunity since losing his WBC middleweight championship in 2024.
