Jermall Charlo’s latest comeback has stalled before he reaches the ring. A training camp injury has forced him out of his October 17 fight against Koen Mazoudier, according to The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, leaving the 36-year-old former champion facing another stretch of inactivity.
Former titleholder Jose Resendiz replaces Jermall in the scheduled 10-round super middleweight bout beneath Sebastian Fundora’s title defense against Ermal Hadribeaj at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
The lost date hurts because Jermall needs regular fights to establish how much he has left. His name still gives him access to opportunities, but promoters cannot build a sustained comeback around appearances separated by lengthy absences.
Mazoudier offered a chance to get rounds and move toward stronger opposition. Instead, Jermall leaves this camp without the ring time that could have helped prepare him for a bigger fight.
Charlo last laced up the gloves back in May 2025 against Thomas LaManna. He dropped LaManna three times before the referee stepped in early in round six, lifting his record to 34-0 with 23 knockouts. That win should have created real momentum, yet nearly 17 months evaporated without him getting back into the ring.
That inactivity makes reading his current level almost impossible. Taking out a fighter like LaManna showed he still handles routine opposition. It proved nothing about his ability to stay active, let alone compete against the monsters at 168 pounds.
Nobody is arguing that long layoffs caused this latest injury. Still, pulling out simply repeats the frustrating cycle that keeps stalling his career.
Time is running out on the 36-year-old former champion. Stacking another delay on his record shrinks whatever window he has left to make real noise at 168. If he needs a soft touch before jumping into deep water, this pullout kicks the entire timeline down the road.
Resendiz capitalizes on the opening in Vegas on October 17. Charlo is back to square one, needing to heal, hunt for a new date, and prove he can actually stay active instead of just talking about it.
