Ennis says time in camp was focused on learning as he prepares for Xander Zayas fight
Jaron “Boots” Ennis says training alongside Saul Alvarez gave him a chance to study one of boxing’s most experienced fighters. The sessions came as Ennis prepares for his move to 154 pounds.
Ennis spent nearly two weeks in camp with Canelo before Alvarez’s fight against Terence Crawford and said the experience was more about learning than trying to prove anything in sparring.
“He was smart,” said Ennis during an interview with Ring Champs. “He take his time. He real patient.”
Boots said he paid close attention to the little things Canelo was doing in the ring.
“I was picking his brain,” said Ennis. “He like 70 fights in, so he know different things and little tricks.”
Ennis also rejected online talk suggesting he joined the camp because of Crawford.
“Everybody think I was on that,” said Ennis. “That was for me to get in shape. Me to get away from Philly.”
The unified champion said the trip gave him a different environment during camp.
“I was fishing,” said Ennis. “I ain’t never fish before. My brother teach me how to fish.”
Ennis revealed he sparred Canelo several times during the stay.
“I think we sparred four or five times,” said Ennis. “The last two times I think we did six and I did eight.”
When asked whether Canelo was the hardest puncher he had shared the ring with, Boots pointed to someone much closer to home.
“The hardest puncher I been in there with was my brother,” said Ennis.
Ennis returns June 27 against Xander Zayas in Brooklyn after moving up from welterweight to junior middleweight.
