James Toney Says Floyd Schofield Is Not Ready For Gervonta Davis

Toney expects Davis to stop the unbeaten lightweight contender if the WBA-ordered title fight moves forward later this year

James Toney believes Floyd Schofield is nowhere near ready for a fight with Gervonta Davis as the WBA pushes Davis toward a mandatory lightweight title defense. The former world champion predicted Davis would stop Schofield if the matchup is finalized for Tank’s expected return later this year.

“That kid is not ready. He will get knocked out,” said Toney to MillCity Boxing.

“[I see] nothing [in Floyd Schofield]. He is a good fighter for the lesser fighters, but when he steps up to Tank’s level, it will be something different. He will be like Frank Martin.”

The comments add to the skepticism already surrounding Schofield’s title push. The 23-year-old has stayed unbeaten, but inactivity has slowed his momentum badly. Since 2024, Schofield has fought just one round, leaving questions about whether he is prepared for a fighter with Davis’ timing, power, and experience at the top level.

The WBA ruling also puts pressure on Davis to move quickly. If he accepts the fight, he can reclaim full championship status at lightweight. If he declines, the sanctioning body can strip him of the position entirely.

Schofield has repeatedly pushed for the opportunity and would become one of the youngest active male world champions in boxing with a victory. Toney, though, believes the fight would end the same way many of Davis’ recent bouts have ended, once the pressure and power start landing clean.

Frank Martin was competitive early against Davis before being knocked out in the eighth round of their June 2024 fight in Las Vegas. Toney expects Schofield to run into the same problem if the matchup gets finalized for Tank’s return later this year.
