Jaime Munguia’s Revival Gets Praise, But Fans Still Bring Up PED Controversy

Munguia returns to Ring top five at 168 after recent wins

Mike Coppinger has credited Eddy Reynoso and Saul Alvarez’s team for Jaime Munguia’s recent improvement. Munguia is now ranked No. 5 at super middleweight by The Ring.

Two fights after that defeat, Munguia is back in the mix at 168 pounds and ranked #5 by The Ring in the updated super-middleweight standings.

Coppinger pointed to visible technical changes since Munguia joined Reynoso’s camp.

“Credit where it’s due: @CANELOTEAM started working with Jaime Munguia after his KO loss to Bruno Surace. Two fights later and Munguia looks like a new fighter and is once again a titleholder. Bouncing on his toes, firing combinations off the jab. Big transformation,” said Coppinger on X.

The ranking itself sparked heavy debate online. Some fans focused on Munguia’s improved movement and sharper jab, while others immediately brought up the positive test for exogenous testosterone metabolites that followed his rematch win over Surace in 2025. Munguia was later cleared after arguing contamination, but many fans still view the situation skeptically.

One reply bluntly stated:

“He also popped for PED’s in his first fight under Reynoso don’t ever leave those details out Mike.”

Another fan added:

“Crazy how some boxing fans and experts don’t care about doping. Munguia, Canelo, Garcia, Whyte… All these guys have been caught and came back some month later for world championship like nothing happened.”

The updated rankings also created arguments about placement. Some fans questioned Hamzah Sheeraz sitting at No. 10, while others felt Diego Pacheco and Caleb Plant were ranked too low. Osleys Iglesias at No. 2 drew attention as well, with several fans calling him the most dangerous fighter outside of Canelo Alvarez.

One recurring suggestion was Munguia against Diego Pacheco, which fans believe could headline a major event in Los Angeles. Another group wants to see whether Munguia’s rebuilt style holds up against a pressure fighter or puncher near the top of the division before buying fully into the comeback narrative.

The reaction shows that Munguia’s standing at 168 is improving again, but the PED cloud has not disappeared. Every strong performance is still being viewed through that lens by a large portion of fans.
