Schofield’s team questions delay as WBA lightweight title picture remains unresolved

Gervonta Davis is being accused of avoiding a fight with unbeaten contender Floyd Schofield. The claims come as uncertainty continues around the WBA lightweight title situation.

Davis, the WBA champion-in-recess at 135 pounds, has not fought since his draw with Lamont Roach Jr. last year. Talk has continued about a return, with a rematch against Isaac Cruz regularly mentioned, but no official next fight has been announced.

That delay has frustrated Schofield’s team, who believe their fighter should already know whether he will face Davis for the belt or move into another title bout.

“There is a reason why Tank said, ‘I will never get in the ring with that kid.’ There is a reason his coach got online and said Tank will never get in the ring with him,” said Schofield Sr. to MillCity Boxing.

Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) has been building his record at lightweight and is viewed by some fans as one of the younger threats in the division. A fight with Davis would represent the biggest chance of his career and one of the more interesting matches available at 135.

Schofield Sr. also made clear he wants Davis brought straight back into a title fight at the lightweight limit rather than allowed a warm-up bout.

“We want to suck him dry and fight him at 135, that is the best advantage that we have right now. If we let Tank get a tune-up, he would be on fire.”

He then claimed Davis is carrying far more weight between fights and would face a hard cut to return.

“He is about 175 pounds right now. He has got to come all the way back down to 135.”

No agreement has been announced between the camps, and Davis has not publicly responded to the latest claims. If a Cruz rematch is finalized instead, Schofield may need to wait longer for his title opening.

Schofield’s side sounds ready. Davis still holds the stronger hand until he names an opponent.
