Frank Warren Backs Jadier Herrera to Dethrone Zepeda

Frank Warren expects Jadier Herrera to take William Zepeda’s WBC lightweight title, backing the unbeaten Cuban to end the Mexican’s reign at his first defense. That would require Herrera to handle a level of sustained pressure he has yet to face.

Warren welcomed the WBC’s order with a prediction on X:

“Fantastic news that the WBC have ordered the Zepeda fight for @JadierHerrera. New Lightweight champion of the world incoming.”

The WBC has scheduled an October 20 purse bid if the camps cannot reach an agreement. Zepeda won the vacant championship by unanimously outpointing Lamont Roach on August 1, with Herrera already designated to face the winner.

Herrera’s power makes this an interesting first defense. The 24-year-old southpaw is 18–0 with 16 knockouts, having stopped Ricardo Nunez in January to claim the interim belt. He waited while Zepeda and Roach contested the full championship. Now he gets his opportunity to take it in the ring.

Zepeda’s willingness to exchange could help Herrera find openings. The champion throws combinations and keeps opponents working, but that approach gives a dangerous puncher chances to hit back. If Herrera can land cleanly between those bursts, Zepeda may have to become more selective.

The harder part is maintaining enough room to deliver those punches. Zepeda can force opponents into spending entire rounds defending, leaving them with fewer opportunities to set their feet. Herrera needs to interrupt that rhythm early. Waiting for a perfect opening could allow the champion to pile up rounds.

Sixteen knockouts give Warren reason for confidence, although Herrera’s record cannot answer how he will respond when Zepeda keeps coming after taking his best shot. This fight should reveal whether the Cuban can remain effective through repeated exchanges and a demanding twelve-round pace.

Warren is predicting a new champion. Herrera must first prove that his power can make Zepeda hesitate—and that he can keep landing when the fight gets exhausting.
