Filip Hrgovic Says Moses Itauma Is About To Face Reality

Peter Fury believes Hrgovic will expose whether the unbeaten heavyweight prospect is truly ready for world-level opposition

Filip Hrgovic believes Moses Itauma is finally about to face the kind of heavyweight fight that will reveal whether his growing hype matches reality. The unbeaten 21-year-old prospect is expected to return August 8 at London’s O2 Arena against the toughest opponent of his professional career.

Itauma (14-0, 12 KOs) has quickly become one of the fastest-rising names in the heavyweight division after stopping every opponent of his career inside six rounds. Frank Warren has already said he expects the 21-year-old to fight for a world title before the end of the year.

Hrgovic appears set to be the man standing in the way.

The Croatian contender is coming off a third-round stoppage win over Dave Allen earlier this month and has openly welcomed a fight against Itauma. His only professional defeat came against the current WBO heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois.

Veteran trainer Peter Fury believes the matchup is exactly the kind of test Itauma now needs.

“I think that it is a great step for Moses, I think they are bringing him on well,” Fury told Boxing News.

“You know, Hrgovic said the right thing, he said, ‘We will see. He could be the next second coming in the heavyweight division, and he could not.’”

“This is a fight that is winnable, but Hrgovic will test him because if he is not the real deal, Hrgovic will find it out. It is a good fight at this stage, and I think that they are bringing young Moses Itauma on very well.”

An official announcement for the fight is still expected, but both sides have already made clear they want the bout. Itauma is scheduled to headline for the third straight time and will do so in London for the first time in his career.

For Itauma, the fight would easily represent the toughest opponent he has faced as a professional. Hrgovic has already shared the ring with experienced contenders and remains one of the heavier punchers in the division. If Itauma gets through him in the same destructive style he has shown so far, the pressure for a world title shot will only grow louder.
