Eddie Hearn Warns Christian Mbilli Can Expose Any Canelo Alvarez Decline Before September 12 Fight

Matchroom promoter says Mbilli is the type of unbeaten super middleweight contender who punishes any slippage from Canelo Alvarez

Eddie Hearn believes Christian Mbilli is exactly the kind of opponent who can reveal whether Canelo Alvarez remains at the top of his game. Ahead of their September 12 fight, Hearn said a diminished version of Canelo would struggle against the unbeaten super middleweight contender.

“Canelo is a true competitor. It was great to see him last week. He’s excited. He’s excited to fight again,” said Hearn to Fight Hub TV.

“And it’s a tough fight. It’s a tough fight to come back to.

“And by the way, if you are finished, you get beat in that fight.”

Hearn’s assessment stands out because much of the early reaction to the September 12 bout focused on whether Canelo should have pursued a bigger name. Mbilli enters the fight unbeaten and has built a reputation as one of the most aggressive pressure fighters in the super middleweight division.

The Canadian-based contender has repeatedly argued that he represents a tougher challenge than many of the opponents Alvarez has faced in recent years. Hearn appears to agree that Mbilli brings real danger, particularly for a fighter approaching the later stages of his career.

“It’s a really good fight, and I’m looking forward to seeing Canelo back in the ring.”

Alvarez has dismissed suggestions that he is looking for easier assignments and recently described Mbilli as a champion-level opponent capable of producing an entertaining fight. Hearn’s comments add another voice to that argument.

For all the talk about Canelo’s achievements and legacy, Hearn’s view was simple. If Alvarez still has plenty left, he should win. If age has finally caught up to him, Mbilli is the kind of opponent capable of making that obvious.
