Eddie Hearn Says Conor Benn Can’t Beat Elite Welterweights

Matchroom promoter believes Benn is better suited to 154 and 160 pounds and sees Ryan Garcia as the favorite in a potential fight

Eddie Hearn does not believe Conor Benn can beat the top fighters at welterweight. The Matchroom promoter says Benn has a stronger chance of succeeding at 154 and 160 pounds, where he believes the British contender performs better physically.

Hearn gave an honest assessment of Benn’s future while discussing a potential fight against Ryan Garcia.

“Conor’s a good fighter. Conor’s got a very explosive, exciting style, but he’s never boxed yet at that level, especially at 147,” said Hearn to the Stomping Ground.

“I don’t think Conor Benn can beat any of the elite guys at 147. I think he’s got a much better chance at doing it at 154 and 160. I don’t think he punches hard at 147. I don’t think he’ll have the same chin at 147.”

Hearn’s comments may surprise some fans, given that fighters are generally expected to face tougher opposition as they move up in weight. However, Benn’s recent performances suggest he may be physically stronger when not draining himself to make the welterweight limit.

Benn fought Chris Eubank Jr. twice at weights far above 147 and appeared durable, energetic, and capable of carrying his power against the naturally bigger man. In contrast, his most recent appearance came at a 150-pound catchweight, where he looked less explosive than he had in the Eubank contests.

Hearn believes Benn’s physical advantages may actually diminish when he returns to welterweight.

“I actually liked him up at close to 160. I thought he looked like he was punching much harder. I thought he looked like he was much more robust,” said Hearn.

The Matchroom promoter still sees Ryan Garcia as the favorite if the two eventually meet.

“Ryan’s been hurt. And Conor’s not afraid to let his hands go. I just feel like Ryan’s just too sharp, you know, and I think there’s a difference in levels between a Ryan Garcia and a Regis Prograis right now,” said Hearn.

The debate for Benn may no longer be whether he can make 147 pounds. The bigger question is whether his future success lies at a higher weight, where he appears physically stronger but would face a different set of challenges.
