The WBO welterweight champion reportedly opens his multi-fight agreement with an ordered defense against Davis.
Devin Haney has reportedly signed a multi-fight agreement with DAZN, with Keyshawn Davis expected to challenge him first. The WBO has ordered the welterweight title defense, although neither DAZN nor Haney had confirmed the deal at publication.
Dan Rafael reported the signing Wednesday and cited a source. The report follows weeks of speculation about Haney’s broadcast future. DAZN had not issued an official announcement at the time of publication.
Haney’s arrival gives DAZN another marquee name at welterweight after Teofimo Lopez joined the platform. Ryan Garcia is also projected to return following his September 12 fight with Conor Benn. That would give DAZN an opportunity to build several major fights in the division.
The WBO recently ordered Haney to defend his title against Keyshawn after plans for a catchweight fight with Shakur Stevenson failed to move forward. Rafael reported that the mandatory defense will be Haney’s first fight under the new agreement.
Haney’s decision also strengthens DAZN’s position at welterweight after the platform reached an agreement with Teofimo Lopez. If Ryan Garcia also returns following his September 12 fight with Conor Benn, DAZN would control several of the division’s biggest attractions, creating more options for future championship bouts and major events.
Zuffa Boxing pursued Haney for months before he chose DAZN. Missing out on the WBO welterweight champion is an early setback for the promotion as it continues expanding its roster.
Attention now turns to negotiations with Keyshawn. The WBO has already ordered the mandatory title defense, leaving the two sides to finalize terms for Haney’s next appearance.
