David Benavidez Leaves Three Major Fights Behind

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/05/2026 - Comments

David Benavidez may belong at cruiserweight physically, but staying there leaves fights with Canelo Alvarez, Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev behind. His comfort at 200 pounds comes with a commercial difficulty: finding opponents who bring comparable recognition and interest.

“No, [I am not returning to light-heavyweight]. I feel great at this weight-class, I don’t have to lose weight, I have never felt as good as I did for my last fight [against Ramirez]. So, I want to be the reigning champion for a long, long time,” Benavidez told The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.

There is little reason to insist that a fighter of Benavidez’s size keep draining himself to pursue opponents in lighter divisions. His stoppage victory over Gilberto Ramirez demonstrated what he could accomplish at cruiserweight. Feeling stronger there is a legitimate reason to stay.

The available attractions are another question. Jai Opetaia offers a serious sporting challenge, but he has yet to become a major crossover attraction in the United States. Benavidez could pursue the leading cruiserweights and collect championships while remaining the fighter largely responsible for selling those events.

Canelo offered a far different commercial opportunity. Their fight failed to happen when both competed at super middleweight, and Benavidez’s present size does not explain away that missed window. Staying at 200 now makes reviving it increasingly unrealistic.

Bivol and Beterbiev represented unfinished business at light heavyweight. Remaining at cruiserweight puts those fights beyond reach unless one of them moves up. Benavidez can reasonably prioritize his physical condition while still acknowledging what disappears from his potential schedule.

Heavyweight could eventually provide more recognizable opponents, but it would introduce substantially different risks. Being large at cruiserweight does not establish that Benavidez could impose his combinations on a heavyweight with Filip Hrgovic’s reach, strength and punching power.

For now, Benavidez has chosen a division where he feels comfortable and can pursue meaningful championships. The challenge is turning those achievements into major events. Cruiserweight offers credible opposition, but few established draws to replace the three names he never fought.
