David Benavidez Faces Different Risks Against Andy Ruiz

David Benavidez’s combinations could overwhelm Andy Ruiz Jr, but a heavyweight meeting would test more than his ability to outwork an opponent. Ruiz would offer a recognizable name for Benavidez’s arrival in the division, along with the counterpunching threat that makes attacking a heavier fighter dangerous.

“I think he’d be a little bit too much for Andy … but Andy’s a solid heavyweight,” Robert Garcia told ProBox TV while discussing the hypothetical matchup with Jose Benavidez Sr.

Garcia favors Benavidez’s speed and sustained combinations, while acknowledging that Ruiz’s strength could create trouble. No fight has been announced.

The attraction for Benavidez is understandable. Ruiz is a former unified heavyweight champion whose victory over Anthony Joshua remains recognizable to casual viewers. Facing him would give Benavidez’s heavyweight debut a selling point that an unfamiliar contender might struggle to provide.

Inside the ring, however, Benavidez would have to judge how much of his usual offense he could safely deliver. His combinations often keep opponents occupied defending, allowing him to extend attacks once he finds an opening. Ruiz’s quick hands make those extended exchanges potentially hazardous. Benavidez could land several punches and still leave himself available for a short counter.

Heavyweight strength would introduce another test. If Ruiz could hold him, lean on him and interrupt his rhythm, Benavidez would have to repeatedly create room to punch. Success at cruiserweight would give him confidence, but it would not establish how comfortably he could sustain that work against a substantially heavier opponent.

Ruiz would also need the conditioning to exploit those opportunities. Waiting for one counter while Benavidez piles up combinations could leave him losing rounds without doing enough to change the fight.

That makes the sporting value of the matchup worth examining. Beating Ruiz would establish that Benavidez could handle an experienced heavyweight with fast hands. It would tell us less about his chances against taller opponents who control distance with a jab and force him to cross considerable space.

Ruiz could be a commercially useful first heavyweight opponent. Whether he would be sufficient preparation for the division’s leading fighters is a different question.
