Dave Allen Says He’ll Retire If Thomas Carty Beats Him In Croker Park

The veteran heavyweight says defeat at Croke Park will end his career, while Thomas Carty sees the fight as his breakthrough opportunity

Dave Allen says his boxing career will be over if he loses to Thomas Carty on September 5. The heavyweight veteran admitted defeat at Croke Park would leave him with one final local fight before retirement.

The 33-year-old accepted the fight knowing he would be walking into hostile territory, but he insisted the challenge doesn’t bring added pressure.

“If I lose this fight, I will retire,” Allen said at the press conference. “I’ll have one more to get to 40. We’ll go back local and have one more and retire. So this is it. If I lose this one, it’s over.”

Allen has built a reputation for taking on difficult assignments throughout his career, sharing the ring with several world-class heavyweights. While he acknowledges Carty’s boxing ability, he believes his own toughness and power will prove decisive.

“I think Thomas is very good. I think he’s a better boxer than me. I think he moves well. But I am one big fat hard man. I hit really hard as well.”

Allen explained that the losses on his record have largely come against elite opposition, adding that whenever he has been able to land consistently, he has usually come away with victory.

“I think with this fella, I’ll catch up with him. I’m big, I’m strong, I eat, I’m durable, and at this level, I think it’ll be enough.”

Allen even predicted how the contest will unfold.

“This is the kind of fight where more often than not I come in, I take a few shots, I get hit for five rounds, they get a bit tired, then I hit them, and it’s over. I think this is how it’ll go,” said Allen,

Carty, meanwhile, said he has enormous respect for Allen but views the bout as the biggest opportunity of his career after injury ruined what was supposed to be his breakthrough appearance at Madison Square Garden.

“You don’t get chances like this twice in life,” Carty said. “So I’m training accordingly.”

With Allen’s career potentially hanging in the balance and Carty looking for the biggest win of his professional career, the heavyweight meeting has become one of the most compelling bouts on the historic Croke Park undercard.
