Christian Mbilli Says Timing Is Perfect For Canelo Alvarez Fight

WBC super middleweight champion believes the timing is right but says the former undisputed champion remains dangerous

Christian Mbilli believes Canelo Alvarez is no longer performing at the level that made him boxing’s dominant super middleweight champion. The WBC titleholder says the September 12 showdown arrives at the right time in his career, while still acknowledging the danger Canelo brings to the ring.

While discussing the matchup, Mbilli said he sees signs that Canelo’s performances have slipped in recent years due to the wear and tear of a long career.

“Of course [he has declined], he started [boxing] very young, I think he was 15 years old, so he has had a lot of fights now,” Mbilli said to Ring Magazine. “I think that his performance [levels are] going down, but he is still very dangerous. I think that it is perfect timing for me.”

Canelo turned professional in 2005 and has fought more than 70 times as a pro, building a resume that includes world titles in four weight classes and victories over some of the biggest names of his era.

Despite believing the Mexican star has declined, Mbilli stressed that he still views him as a serious threat.

“I think that I am a very dangerous fighter for him, but I have to be careful too because it is Canelo. It is not a small boxer, but I think that I will make a very [big] statement with this fight and I am very dangerous for him.”

The September 12 clash will be Canelo’s first appearance since his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in 2025. Mbilli enters the fight as the reigning WBC champion after being elevated to full WBC 168-lb champion on January 27th, and now has the opportunity to add the biggest name on his record.
