Canelo Alvarez “wants to become a billionaire” – Robert Garcia

Trainer Robert Garcia claims Canelo Alvarez earned $50 million in his last fight against Jermell Charlo in September 2020, and his aim is to become a billionaire.

Currently, there hasn’t been a billionaire fighter, but Canelo has the potential to become the first. Floyd Mayweather Jr. could have achieved this feat if he had not lost his motivation to continue his career after defeating UFC fighter Conor McGregor in 2017.

Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will need to get busy if he’s to make it to the billionaire stage, as his net worth is reportedly $200 million. It’s going to take some doing get accumulate the rest before his skills decline.

Fights Canelo needs to become a billionaire:

  • David Benavidez x 3
  • Terence Crawford x 3
  • Errol Spence
  • Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis
  • Artur Beterbiev
  • Jermall Charlo
  • Tim Tszyu
  • Dmitry Bivol
  • David Morrell Jr

Canelo wants to become a billionaire

“That’s what I heard. It’s hard to explain. This guy’s great. In this guy’s mind, he wants to become a billionaire,” said Robert Garcia to ESNEWS about Canelo Alvarez having made $50 million for his last fight against Jermell Charlo on September 30th. The Mexican star Canelo is already back in the gym training.

“He wants to have so many businesses and work for Mexican people. He wants to be great. Very few are like that. Mayweather was one. Canelo just wants more and more and doesn’t get tired of it.”

It’s not going to be easy for Canelo to get to a billion because he can’t take the easy fights like he’s been doing against guys like John Ryder. He would need to take the toughest fights possible against the opposition that he’s avoided and forget about putting so much time into his golf hobby.

“That’s something to admire, something to really admire and respect. He still trains like he’s hungry,” said Robert. “After his last few performances, most of us thought, ‘Okay, maybe he’s going down; maybe his career is declining now,’ and he came back and fought like he was young & hungry. You got to admire that s**t.

“Good for him, man, because you don’t find those,” said Robert.

Canelo struggled and looked old in his 2022 fights against Bivol and 41-year-old Golovkin, possibly due to his hand problem. As long as he can continue fighting the way he did against Jermell Charlo, he might be able to become the first billionaire boxer.

Benavidez pushing hard for Canelo fight

“I think he’s fed up with people asking about a fight between me and him, but honestly, that’s the best fight to make happen and the toughest fight to make happen. He knows that, and I know he’s the toughest fight that I’ll ever have,” said David Benavidez to K.O. Artist Sports about Canelo.

Benavidez is really eager to get that payday against Canelo, but he better not overlook his next opponent Demetrius Andrade on November 25th because he could lose that fight. That’s a guy that can neutralize his huge size, and outbox him the way Caleb Plant was doing last March.

“I’m not saying that’s the toughest fight I’ll ever have, but it’s probably up there at the top,” said Benavidez. “I won’t know until my career ends. I’ll have to answer that question. He’s a tough guy, man. He’s a tough guy, and I have a lot of respect for Canelo.

“I feel that fans want to see him in with a great [interim] super middleweight champion like myself,” Benavidez said. “I just feel that he was fighting a smaller fighter coming up from two weight classes, and that’s why people are asking for more from him,” said Benavidez about Canelo’s recent title defense against 154-pounder Jermell Charlo on September 30th.

“We kind of knew that would happen. In the back of our heads, we kind of said, ‘What if, Charlo,’ but he was a smaller guy, and you could tell by the fight,” said Benavidez.
