Canelo Alvarez Reveals Final Fight Count Before Retirement

The four-weight champion expects only three or four more bouts as Christian Mbilli waits on October 31.

Canelo Alvarez expects to fight only three or four more times before retirement. The Mexican champion says enjoyment, rather than money or unfinished business, keeps him boxing.

“I don’t do it because I get big paydays; it’s because I really still enjoy boxing. But there’s nothing out there for me to prove. I’ve accomplished pretty much everything in boxing. There’s maybe three or four more fights left for me,” said Canelo to Ariel Helwani on his YouTube channel.

Alvarez’s comments come as he prepares for his October 31 clash with WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli. The fight was recently postponed after Canelo revealed he delayed the start of training camp to resolve family matters before returning his full attention to boxing.

If Canelo follows through on his timeline, every appearance from this point forward will carry greater importance. The 36-year-old has captured world titles in four weight classes, become the undisputed super middleweight champion, and defeated many of the biggest names of his era. He also moved up to light heavyweight to win a world title before returning to 168 pounds.

Although Canelo believes he has nothing left to prove, he has no immediate plans to retire. His latest comments indicate he still enjoys the demands of training and competing despite already building one of the sport’s most accomplished careers.

A meeting with Mbilli would be the first of what Alvarez believes will be his final three or four fights, making each appearance increasingly meaningful as his career winds toward its conclusion.
