Whittaker says Crawford’s warning about “playing with your food” shaped his approach in Liverpool
Ben Whittaker says advice from Terence Crawford helped shape his approach after stopping Braian Suarez in Liverpool. The British light heavyweight pointed to a message about finishing opponents without overplaying moments.
Whittaker (11-0-1, 8 KOs) produced one of his cleanest performances to date, dropping Suarez early and finishing the job quickly. After the fight, he explained that a past conversation with Crawford stayed with him and made him rethink parts of his approach inside the ring.
Whittaker said Crawford gave him a direct message when they crossed paths in Dubai.
“When I was in Dubai for an event, I saw Terence Crawford, and he said, ‘Trust me, bro, you’re a great fighter. You’ve got all the skill, but you play with your food too much.’ I sat back and thought, that’s true,” Whittaker said to Fight Hub TV.
It is a lot easier to look impressive when the guy across from you is basically a stationary target. Suarez didn’t have the tools to make Whittaker pay for his mistakes, let alone force him into a real fight where he’d have to dig deep.
The “playing with your food” habit usually happens when a fighter knows they are levels above their opponent and starts getting bored or looking for highlights. Crawford’s advice is gold, but the real test of whether Whittaker has actually matured will come when he faces someone who can actually crack.
When Whittaker gets in there with a live dog who isn’t intimidated by the Olympic pedigree, we’ll see if he sticks to that clinical approach or if he reverts to the antics because he can’t find a way through. At 175, the fighters at the top don’t just hang around to be unloaded on.
Historically, when the pressure has risen, Whittaker has defaulted to the amateur safety net, constant movement, and flashy defense, rather than digging in. In Whittaker’s first fight with Liam Cameron in Riyadh, Whittaker looked uncomfortable under pressure and was arguably on his way to a loss before that weird tumble over the ropes ended things in a draw.
While he did come back and stop Cameron in the second round of their rematch in April 2025, that doesn’t erase the memory of him struggling when a live domestic opponent actually forced him to work.
Beterbiev or Benavidez will walk through the showmanship to land heavy. If Whittaker gets tagged hard, does he sit down on his shots or start “playing with his food,” running/taunting to buy time?
Morrell and Bivol offer a relentless technical pace. Whittaker has a tendency to take rounds off mentally when he’s posing. At the top level, you can’t pose for 10 seconds without eating a four-punch combination.
Whittaker isn’t a prospect in the traditional sense. If he hasn’t fully internalized that cold edge Crawford talked about, he’ll revert to his Olympic style the second a world-class fighter makes him feel human.
