Terence Crawford threw Ryan Garcia’s criticism back at him after Garcia claimed he had agreed to fight 49-year-old Floyd Mayweather. Ryan has questioned Crawford’s willingness to face young opponents, but his pursuit of Mayweather gave Crawford an easy opening.
Crawford questioned Ryan’s choice on X, then added another jab by picking the older man to beat him.
“I know you not fighting nobody old and outta they prime. Shouldn’t you be fighting all these young hungry in prime lions?” Crawford said. “P.S Floyd gone beat yo ass if yall fight.”
The wording gets to the heart of their argument. Ryan has criticized Crawford’s opposition and questioned why he didn’t face younger fighters such as Jaron Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. Now he wants Mayweather, whose last professional appearance came against Conor McGregor in 2017.
That makes Ryan’s position difficult to defend using his own standard. Mayweather’s name would sell the event, but beating him at 49 would offer limited evidence of how Ryan compares with the best active welterweights.
Ryan claims the two have agreed to fight at 147 pounds for his WBC title. His announcement, however, does not establish that the contest has been officially sanctioned or that a date and venue are secured.
The appeal is obvious. Mayweather’s 50-0 record gives Ryan something to chase, and the promotion would have little trouble finding an audience. Whether Floyd can still compete over a full professional fight is a separate question.
Crawford’s prediction adds another layer of ridicule. He is telling Ryan that he has chosen an opponent well beyond his best years and could still lose.
Ryan has also called for a Crawford fight during their increasingly personal back-and-forth. For now, Crawford has found a simpler way to answer him: ask why the fighter demanding younger opposition is chasing one of boxing’s oldest available names.
