Artur Beterbiev Promises News After 20 Months Away

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/13/2026 - Comments

Artur Beterbiev promises exciting news soon as he approaches 20 months out of the ring. The former undisputed light heavyweight champion needs a fight date after spending much of that time waiting for a third meeting with Dmitry Bivol.

Beterbiev (21-1, 20 KOs) posted a short message on social media today without identifying an opponent or explaining what he plans to announce.

“I think there will be some exciting news soon. Lets see how interesting they are,” said Beterbiev.

His last appearance was a 12-round majority decision loss to Bivol on February 22, 2025. That left their series tied at one win apiece, giving Beterbiev an obvious reason to pursue the trilogy. The money he made from their first two fights also helps explain why he was willing to wait.

But he could have taken another fight while trying to get Bivol back in the ring. Instead, Beterbiev has nothing to show inside the ropes for those months. He turns 42 on January 21, 2027, and another lengthy negotiation could push his return past that birthday.

For a fighter whose game depends on pressure, strength, and sustained punching, spending this long inactive raises questions that training alone cannot answer. Beterbiev can stay in shape in the gym, but he still needs to get accustomed to an opponent making him work, changing the pace and forcing him to react.

A third Bivol fight would give him the chance to regain what he lost. Waiting indefinitely for it, however, leaves Bivol controlling the timetable while Beterbiev gets older.

The announcement could involve a different opponent, a return date, or something unrelated to a fight. His message gives no indication yet. Until he provides those details, the most encouraging news would be a signed bout that finally gets him off the shelf.

With David Benavidez campaigning at cruiserweight, Beterbiev finds himself boxed into a corner. Unless His Excellency Turki Alalshikh steps in with another massive Riyadh Season site fee to force the Bivol trilogy over the finish line, Beterbiev has almost zero leverage.

Bivol held all the cards once he recovered from his back surgery and made his defense against Michael Eifert. Waiting around indefinitely while turning 42 in January has simply aged Beterbiev out of his prime.

If this upcoming announcement turns out to be an interim keep-busy bout against an unranked body on a regional card just to shake off ring rust, the public interest is going to be nonexistent. Unless it is Bivol 3 or an absurd jump up in weight himself, there is simply no name out there capable of moving the needle.
