Andy Ruiz Jr Says He Needs Two Fights Before Moses Itauma Bout

Andy Ruiz Jr says he would need two return fights before facing Moses Itauma amid talk of a July 25 bout in London. The former unified champion signaled interest but made clear he wants activity first after time out of the ring.

Moses Itauma is closing in on another major step in his rise after reports placed the unbeaten heavyweight at London’s O2 Arena on July 25, but Andy Ruiz Jr says he would need time before accepting that assignment.

Itauma, 21, has not been extended beyond six rounds in his 14 professional fights and is being advanced toward a possible world title shot before the end of the year. His next outing is expected to be his first headline appearance in London, with promoter Frank Warren still searching for the right opponent.

Warren has previously said several heavyweights have either turned the fight down or priced themselves out, a sign of how difficult matching the young contender has become.

Ruiz, the former unified heavyweight champion who stunned Anthony Joshua in 2019, was asked whether he would consider facing Itauma. He said activity would be needed first after time out of the ring.

“Of course, I don’t back down from any fight, but I want to be ready to fight. I want to get at least two fights in first. Then if they put me with him, I’ll be ready, and it will be a great fight,” said Ruiz Jr. to Casino.org.

Ruiz also believes his pressure style could make the matchup competitive if he returns in proper condition.

“When you combine a Mexican fighting style that’s about going forward and not being scared of getting hit, with his style, then I think it will make for an interesting fight. So we’ll see if he has it or not.”

The heavyweight division remains crowded, but Itauma’s team appears focused on measured progression rather than rushing him into the deepest end too soon. A durable former titleholder would provide rounds, resistance, and a recognized name.

Ruiz added that he still backs himself against current contenders if fully prepared.

“If I’m at 100%, and I’m in shape, I don’t think there’s anyone that could beat me. I think me and Itauma would go at it though. I feel like I could beat these guys (AJ & Itauma).”

No opponent has been confirmed for July 25, though the next choice will say plenty about how quickly Itauma’s camp plans to move toward a title fight.
