Alan Chaves Faces Eridson Garcia on September 4 in Newark

The WBO No. 2-ranked lightweight meets Garcia for the WBO Latino title on the Andy Ruiz Jr. undercard as he continues his push toward a world title shot.

WBO No. 2-ranked lightweight Alan Chaves will face Eridson Garcia for the WBO Latino lightweight title on September 4 at Prudential Center in Newark. A victory would strengthen Chaves’ standing as one of the leading contenders for a future WBO world title opportunity.

The bout joins the undercard of the Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Damian Knyba event, which streams on TNT and DAZN.

Chaves has steadily climbed the WBO rankings through his run at lightweight and now gets another chance to strengthen his position before a possible push toward a world title opportunity. Garcia enters as an experienced opponent with wins against solid regional competition and has challenged for titles during his career.

The September 4 card marks Ruiz’s first fight since signing with Matchroom and his return after a lengthy spell out of the ring. Vito Mielnicki Jr. and Austin Williams are also scheduled to meet in the co-feature.

A convincing performance by Chaves, 25, would keep him near the front of the WBO rankings at 135 pounds as the division continues to shift over the remainder of the year. Garcia has the opportunity to disrupt those plans by handing the Argentine contender the toughest setback of his career.

Chaves (22-0, 19 KOs) has built his ranking through an aggressive style and a high knockout percentage, making him one of the names to watch in the WBO’s lightweight picture. Garcia (23-2, 14 KOs) represents another opportunity to prove he belongs among the leading contenders before a potential step into a higher-profile fight later this year.
