Burns vs. Laryea on March 12th

Ricky Burns will make the second defence of his World Boxing Organization (WBO) World Super-Featherweight title on March 12 at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow.

He will face Scot-slayer Joseph Laryea, who has already beaten Paul Appleby.

Burns won the title with an exciting victory over Roman Martinez.

And he made a successful defence at the Braehead in December, beating Andreas Evensen on points.

On that card, Ghana’s Laryea took a split-decision win over Appleby, picking up the WBO Intecontinental super-featherweight title, and earning his shot at Burns.

“I’m delighted to be putting on another major show in Scotland,” said promoter Frank Warren.

“Ricky has show in his last two fights that he has the capabilities of becoming a major star in Glasgow.

“He is well on his way to achieving that goal, and I’m confident that there will be another big crowd at the Braehead Arena.

“This is going to be a cracking fight because Laryea showed in December that he’s dangerous, and he won’t take a backward step.

“Burns likes it when faced with an aggressive opponent, but he’ll have to be at his best on March 12 because Laryea is a tough customer.”

But Laryea hit back by saying: I come to Scotland again to KO Ricky burns and take back the belt.

“He disrespected me last time I saw him and now I make him pay for this.

“Unless he says sorry before we meet in the ring I will gut him like a pig.

“Appleby has already taste my power and I will destroy him. I will see you on March 12 in the ring Mr Burns, and be ready for war.”

Burns v Laryea headlines an exciting fight card that also features Michael Jennings against Edinburgh’s Gary McMillan in an Eliminator for the British Welterweight Champion (subject to British Boxing Board of Control approval); South Queensferry’s Paul Appleby returns in a six round contest in the featherweight division; Commonwealth Games Champion Callum Johnson, who captained the Scottish boxing team, follows up his stunning first round KO win last December in a four-round contest; Edinburgh’s Stephen Simmons, who won bronze at the Commonwealth Games, makes his professional debut in the cruiserweight division; unbeaten Dublin super-featherweight Steven Ormond features in an eight-rounder; Edinburgh light-middleweight John Thain, Glasgow featherweights Jonathan Slowey and Michael Roberts, and Welsh super-featherweight Craig Evans complete the card.
