By Robert Jackson: The subject of Manny Pacquiao’s rising status has everybody on the bandwagon, the bus per-se, words like GOAT are being thrown around. NOT SO FAST!! Right after the Pacquiao/Cotto fight Money Mayweather who had been silent after and since his dominating victory over Juan Manuel Marquez resurfaced with some choice words of his own directed towards Cotto conqueror Manny Pacquiao who in Mayweather’s estimation REFUSED to challenge him or call him out post fight.
Subsequent media releases involving Mayweather had him saying in a Dangerfieldesque tone “I don’t get no RESPECT”! Currently a 70/30 split in Pacquiao’s favor is on the table for a Pacquiao/Mayweather bout tenatively scheduled for May 2010!! Cotto was at least able to get a 65.25/34.75 split in Pacquiao’s favor! What will come next is a 145lb catchweight and a weight penalty. Freddie Roach recently said if a Mayweather fight can’t be made they would be willing to give Marquez another chance at 145lbs. Marquez on the other hand has his sights set on Ricky Hatton. If unable to make a deal with Team Pacquiao and Bob Arum, Money Mayweathers braintrust will accept the Mosley challenge and face Sugar Shane if he defeats Andre Berto in Jan 2010.
Just today Top Rank boss Arum had some choice words of his own directed towards Mayweather, saying that “Mayweather may duck a Pacquiao fight”! In 2005 Arum said “Mayweather is the BEST GUY in boxing”. Also Manny Pacquiao arriving upon arriving in the Phillipines responded and was quoted as saying “Mayweather should call me out, I did better PPV numbers then him” (by 250,000). By the way WHERE are the PPV numbers from Cotto/Margarito??
Meantime on boxing websites and the like at hot debate is ongoing regarding Mayweather’s motives, place in boxing and how he should proceed towards making the fight we all want to see against Manny Pacquiao. Many suggest that a 70/30 split in Pacquiao’s favor is fair and equitable and that Mayweather should shut up and take the DEAL!! What they are also saying indirectly is if Mayweather DOESN’T take this DEAL he REALLY doesn’t want to fight Pacquiao, he’s REALLY SCARED of Pacquiao. An open letter to Mayweather was written this week and the author of that letter suggested a 50/50 split but allowed for Pacquiao’s glove selection and to enter the ring last as solutions to get the fight done!
Just In Freddie Roach acclaimed trainer of Pacquiao announced a 50/50 split will get the fight DONE with a higher percentage going too the winner after the PPV buys are calculated, what about the gloves and the catchweight Freddie?? And all of a sudden Mayweather has gone silent, gone back underground. More to come….
