News: Al Bernstein Channel Shows Exciting Boxing; TKO Boxing Presents “A Warriors Homecoming”

The August 21 Crown Boxing card provided surprises and some near surprises in an exciting 7 fight card, and all the matches can still be seen on the Al Bernstein Boxing Channel at www.ibnsports.com. Al Bernstein, who called the matches at ringside said, “The hallmark of a really good evening of boxing is competitive action and results that are very much in doubt. That’s exactly what this Crown boxing show provided.” He added, “There were knockdowns, comebacks, and even some controversy to spice things up..”

Oliver McCall defended his IBA Heavyweight crown in a spirited and close battle with Franklin Lawrence. The unanimous decision for McCall was hotly debated and a call for a rematch was immediate. The 44 year old McCall showed grit and determination by winning the last several rounds to pull out the win.

Here are some highlights from the rest of the card:

Junior welterweight prospect Lawrence Hughes was hurt badly in the first two rounds by Phoenix product Marcos Mendias and looked like he was on the verge of his first defeat, when he came back to score a dramatic third round TKO.

A favorite who did lose, but in courageous fashion, was Brian Battease. He was knocked down by Dustin Day in round one and suffered a fractured ankle. He fought the remaining rounds anyway and he and Day produced an exciting four round split decision match, with the verdict going to Day.
Lightweight Ricardo Calzada and Jeff Watkins, two men with outstanding amateur careers, faced each other in their pro debut. The result was a well fought four round slugfest. Watkins went down in round one but came back with rallies of his own over the next few rounds. Calzada, a 19 year old with power and aggression, did enough to win a hard fought decision.
