News: Kessler-Perdomo Purse Bid; Zsolt Erdei wants to unify titles

The WBA has called a purse bid for the fight between WBA Super-Middleweight Champion Mikkel Kessler and mandatory challenger Gusmyl Perdomo. The bidding will take place on Monday, July 20th (18:00) at the European Boxing Association main office in Vitoria, Spain. “That is great news,” said Chris Meyer, General Manager of Team Sauerland. “Mikkel has been inactive for so many months so it is about time to get things moving.” Kessler was officially unveiled as a member of Team Sauerland during a press conference in Copenhagen on Thursday..

Zsolt Erdei wants to unify titles

Light heavyweight WBO champion Zsolt Erdei has been interviewed by a hungarian news website, in which he talked about his possible opponents.

„A bout with Jürgen Brähmer is possible because it’s an old dream of Universum to have a world champion from Germany once again. But they have to be aware of the risk, because I’m going to beat him! Brähmer is a very tough fighter, with slick boxing skills, but it’s an impossible mission for him to defeat me.”

Erdei has been targeted by Beibut Shumenov recently, but the Hungarian champ’s looking for bigger challenges than the young, inexperienced fighter from Kazakhstan.

“Shumenov? I’ve never seen him, and I don’t understand how he came up. He challenged me many times in public, but what should I do with it? Wait a sec, I don’t think I should jump immediately each time someone challenges me! He has to fight 10-15 more bouts and then we can talk about the possibility of a fight. It doesn’t work this way that the boxers fight anyone they want to. If it worked this way I would have already fought Jones, Tarver and Dawson a long time ago!”

The WBO champ, who’ll probably step into ring in October next time, told some words about the changes in the division, which happened in the recent past.

“The dethronement of Hugo Hernan Garay was a very great surprise, because the spanish Gabriel Campillo didn’t belong to the elite of the division. But it proves the fact that nobody should ever be underestimated. The romanian Diaconu is a good boxer, but I never classified him as one of the best in the division, so, his defeat hasn’t surprised me. From Jean Pascal I heard at the time when he was mentioned, as a potential opponent for my countryman, Károly Balzsay. Of course, my goal is a unification bout with one of the other champions, but I cannot do anything for that, it depends on my promoter.”
