Boxing News: Joey Gilbert, Rafael Concepcion, Jones-Perez

RENO, NEVADA (October 29, 2008) Super middleweight Joey Gilbert has landed in Baltimore, Maryland to return to the ring tomorrow night, October 30th against Michigan’s “FLAWLESS” Dan Wallace in a six round bout at the Jonathan Ogden Foundation Charity Boxing Event at Martin Valley Mansion in Cockeysville, MD..

The Gilbert/Wallace bout highlights a six bout card for the foundation which raises money to benefit inner-city schools in Baltimore .

Gilbert, 15-1 (11KO’s), is returning to the ring after a one year absence following his first round knockout win over Charles Howe last September which was later changed to a no-contest.

Said promoter Chet Koerner of TKO Boxing Promotions, “This is our plan for Joey leading up the fight with Brinkley. Joey’s in great shape and has been in serious training since September. We’d like to get him a few more fights before the big one with Brinkley in Reno early next year.”

The Season One Contender participant has been training diligently this year with a recently announced grudge match with cross-town rival Jesse Brinkley in Reno on the horizon.

“I’ve been in Big Bear training with Tito Ortiz and with Diego Sanchez in San Diego. Training has really amped up since mid-September and now I feel ‘more than ready’ for anything that comes my way. Although this bout came up on short notice, I’m in great shape and ready to roll.”

About fighting in Baltimore at the charity event, Gilbert said, “It’s a win-win situation. I get to fight and it’s a great opportunity to raise money for a most worthy cause.”

The 31 year old Wallace brings a record of 9-6 with three knockouts into the bout with Gilbert. “Honestly, I don’t know much about him, I’m just going to work on what I do best, feel him out in the first round and take it from there, said Gilbert.

In regards to his many fans in Reno and around the country, “I’m truly blessed with the support I’ve gotten from fans in my career. The last year has been tough and it’s nice to know the fans have stayed strong with me.”

The co-feature will be a four-round female junior lightweight bout between former amateur standout Katy Klinefelter of Iowa City , IA (1-0, one KO) and the debuting Jasica Rojo.

Rafael Concepcion to fight in Panama, November 26th

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA – 29th October 2008

It was announced today by Optimum Sports Agency that Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion will make his ring return November 26th in Panama.

The bout will be promoted by Rogelio Espino of Promociones y Eventos Del Istmo and it will take place at the Centro de Convenciones Atlapa, Panama City, Panama.

This will be Concepcion’s first bout since losing the WBA interim Super Flyweight Title to Mexico’s Jose “Travieso” Arce in a very entertaining back and forth fight on September 15th in Mexico City.

Concepcion concedes that the elements where against him fighting at altitude and in Mexico City on their Independence Day but gives full credit to Arce.

“Arce is a very experienced fighter and it was a good fight. My energy levels I think where affected by the altitude but I won’t make excuses. He won a great fight. I hope I get the opportunity to fight him again” said Concepcion.

Concepcion’s manager Damon de Berry says “Rafael is looking forward to getting back into the ring. This fight is just the first step back to becoming champion again and we will take it one fight at a time”

Concepcion’s opponent will be the tough Colombian Santos Marimon who is on an 8 fight winning streak.
