Calzaghe: Kessler Needs Lessons From Schmeichel

Mikkel Kessler is going to feel like former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel when they clash at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on November 3 says World super-middleweight ring king Joe Calzaghe. The undefeated Welshman reckons WBA/WBC World champion Kessler will be in for the same hammering as Jeff Lacy, who Calzaghe hit with a staggering 1007 punches in their fight last year, and will unable to cope with the southpaws lightning fast power punches that have knocked-out 32 of his 43 opponents..

“He’d better get some good coaching from his countryman Peter Schmeichel about how to catch shots because he is going to get blitzed with punches from all angles right from the first bell,” said WBO and Ring Magazine Champion Calzaghe.

“Schmeichel is the only other Dane who would have been the target of so many shots so Kessler should really go and see him for some advice!”

“I landed over 1000 clean punches on Lacy and right now I’m punching harder, faster and more accurate than ever before so I wouldn’t be surprised if I doubled that figure on Kessler.”

“Me against Kessler will be like Juventus hitman Alessandro Del Piero taking potshots at Schmeichel!”

Calzaghe, boxing’s longest reigning world champion and making record 21st WBO World title defence of his title, also says the pressure will be on him against the Great Dane but it will bring out the best in him.

He added, “This fight has really lit my fire because, like in the Lacy fight, I’m the underdog against Kessler which is fine by me. Everyone was saying that my time was up against Lacy and that I would get battered by him, instead, I used all the comments to fuel my desire to give him a real good beating.”

“It’s the same against Kessler, they all see this young, dangerous, fighter who is going to smash me up. That’s fine by me, I’m using it to motivate me to put in a great performance.”

“I’ve been at the top for ten years, with 20 world title defences and faced the best around and when the pressure’s on that’s when I perform to my best ability. The question is how will Kessler cope?”
