Tony Oakey Challenges Peter Oboh For British Light Heavyweight Title

28.03.07 – Tony Oakey is using the same training camp in Tenerife as David Haye in preparation for his clash with Peter Oboh for the British Light Heavyweight title. This much awaited bout, which takes place on the undercard of the David Haye vs Tomasz Bonin fight at London’s Wembley Arena on 27 April, has been to the forefront of Oakey’s mind for some time..

Immediately after his 9 March defeat of Josip Jalusic, Oakey 23-2 (5 KOs) was clear on his future plans and Peter Oboh 14-5 (12 KOs) in particular.

“I have always been ready for the Oboh fight,” said Oakey. “I am more mature now and I am so much better since I have been with [my new trainer] Johnny Eames. I knew that if anything went wrong tonight it would damage my belief and my opportunity to defeat Peter Oboh, the British champion.”

Nothing went wrong for Oakey and his large group of vocal supporters who chanted ‘Oakey Kokey’ throughout his 59-55 defeat of Jalusic.

Portsmouth resident Oakey moved to London as he “felt the change would do me good” and is unbeaten in four fights since moving to the capital.

“If I don’t beat Oboh I don’t see anywhere I can go,” Oakey said. “No disrespect to him but he hasn’t fought for close to two years, and he is maturing in age! I have really been looking forward to 2007 and being a busy champ and I want to make my first defence in Portsmouth.”

Tickets for Oakey’s clash with Oboh, which form part of an impressive undercard to the Haye vs Bonin fight are priced at £100; £70 & £40.
