Speedy Gonzales Training with Winky Wright

18.04.05 – Junior Welterweight prospect Al “Speedy” Gonzales (16-2-1) is training with Winky Wright as Wright prepares for his May 14th showdown with Felix Trinidad. Gonzales, coming off a disappointing loss in February on Shobox against Oscar Diaz, is looking to get his career back on track. “I know I’ve got another great opportunity here,” Gonzales said from Las Vegas..

“My trainer, Jesse Reid was able to hook me up with Winky and his people and it’s been going great the last three weeks.” “Things are going real good here. I’m originally from Florida and Winky and I know a lot of the same people.”

To help matters further, Speedy’s managers, Patrick Doljanin and Albert Falcon were able to get the help of strength and conditioning coaches Darryl and Derrick Hudson. The Hudson brother’s client list includes: Winky Wright and Jesse Reid’s latest charge, WBO Heavyweight Champ, Lamon Brewster. The Hudson’s have also worked with Shane Mosley and they helped NBA star Shaquile O’Neil rehab from his foot injury.

According to Jesse Reid, “all Speedy needs to do is listen and dedicate himself to the sport and he will be a champion.” “I’d like to get him 2-3 fights this summer and see how he improves.”

Co-manager Albert Falcon agrees, “Al is one win away from being in the mix. Having two losses is no big deal. Look at Gatti, 6-losses, Mickey Ward had 11 losses. Heck, Ezzard Charles had 25 losses. “Speedy” didn’t lose to bums, which is what these undefeated guys are fighting. Let’s see Salita and Mali-what’s-his-name (Malignaggi) fight someone. They don’t have the heart or the talent.”

Following the Wright camp, Gonzales will join Floyd Mayweather as Mayweather gets ready for his June showdown with Arturo Gatti.

Regarding his on going feud with Paul Malignaggi, Gonzales simply laughed. “Man, I’m out here working with World Champions and soon to be World Champions. He (Maligaggi) isn’t a fighter. He’s been talking for the last three years and STILL ain’t fought anyone. He won’t fight me. He’s just a scarred, protected, white boy.” We got real fighters out here in Vegas and in Cali. Dudes out here think he’s nothing but a joke.”

“Jesse Reid has a great saying: Nobody ever won a fight by talking about it”, said Doljanin. I’ve spoken with Lou Di Bella’s office and they said the fight will happen. Let’s hope so. It’s time to take off lil’ Paulie’s diaper.”
