Tyson Fury Opponent Announcement Could Reveal Anthony Joshua Fight Concerns

Frank Warren says Fury’s August opponent will be confirmed this week as pressure builds before the planned Joshua showdown

Tyson Fury’s next opponent will be announced this week, and the matchup could reveal how much confidence exists around his current form before the planned Anthony Joshua fight in November. Fury struggled through difficult moments against Arslanbek Makhmudov last month, increasing scrutiny around his comeback performances heading into the biggest British heavyweight fight of this era.

Promoter Frank Warren confirmed to Sky Sports that Fury’s comeback opponent for August is close to being finalized.

“Keep watching this space,” Warren told Sky Sports.

“It will be a good opponent, it’ll be good for him. He can’t afford to slip up because ‘AJ’s’ got his fight in a few weeks’ time.

“[Joshua] has got to come through that, Tyson has to come through this, and then the big one will be in November.”

The Fury-Joshua fight has been discussed for years, and contracts for the event are reportedly already signed, but both heavyweights still have to survive their tune-ups first.

Joshua returns July 25 against little-known heavyweight Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia. Fury’s opponent remains unconfirmed, although names like Andy Ruiz Jr. and Jarrell Miller had been linked previously.

Neither is now expected to get the fight.

Fury retired earlier this year after consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk in 2024, but quickly reversed course once the possibility of a domestic mega-fight against Joshua moved closer to reality.

The pressure surrounding the August fight is significant because a loss would destroy one of British boxing’s biggest events before it ever reaches the ring.
