Mikkel Kessler had seen enough by the seventh round. His fighter, Oliver Zaren, was still taking punishment from Osleys Iglesias without giving the IBF super middleweight champion much reason to back off, prompting the former champion to throw in the towel on Thursday night in Quebec City.
Iglesias retained his IBF and IBO belts at Théâtre Capitole in a fight that showed the limits of Zaren’s pre-fight confidence. The Danish challenger had talked about his experience with bigger sparring partners and his ability to handle the Cuban’s power. Taking punches, however, was only part of the job. He needed to land enough of his own to interrupt Iglesias, and that never happened consistently.
The larger Zaren stayed with it, but Iglesias gradually wore him down. The champion landed cleanly and increased the pace as the fight progressed, leaving Kessler watching a contest in which his fighter’s toughness was extending the punishment rather than creating a route to victory.
There was no need for Zaren to be knocked unconscious to establish who was better. By the seventh, the fight had provided its answer, and Kessler’s intervention spared his boxer more damage.
Zaren (19-1-1, 8 KOs) arrived ranked fifth by the IBF, yet his record lacked a win over a leading contender. This was a steep jump from the opposition he had previously faced. His size and unbeaten record offered little protection once Iglesias began putting his punches together.
Iglesias (16-0, 15 KOs), making his first IBF defense, followed his stoppage wins over Vladimir Shishkin and Pavel Silyagin with another opponent unable to reach the final bell.
The result strengthens the case for matching him against the division’s other champions. Zaren gave him several rounds of work, but little sustained competition. Iglesias has already shown he can dismantle challengers at this level; a unification fight would offer a better measure of how far his power and skill can take him.
