Xander Zayas Walks Away From Boots Ennis Rematch

The expired rematch clause clears Jaron “Boots” Ennis to target unification fights as the junior middleweight title picture opens up.

Jaron “Boots” Ennis is free to negotiate any fight at junior middleweight after Xander Zayas declined to enforce their contractual rematch. Dan Rafael confirmed the deadline expired, ending Ennis’ only remaining obligation from their June title fight.

Boxing journalist Dan Rafael broke the news on X.

“FYI: Xander Zayas has let expire his 21-day window to enforce an immediate rematch with Boots Ennis, who is now free to make some other fight and has no more obligation to a rematch.”

Their first meeting ended with Ennis taking control through sharp jab discipline and distance control before increasing the pressure late. As Zayas slowed, Ennis found cleaner combinations and forced the referee to halt the contest in the seventh round.

The decision points Zayas toward rebuilding instead of heading straight back into another championship fight. Additional rounds against leading contenders could sharpen his timing, improve his punch selection and strengthen another title run.

Ennis now holds a stronger negotiating hand. Without the rematch clause dictating his schedule, every championship route at 154 pounds becomes a realistic target, whether that means chasing another belt or landing another elite opponent.

The division can finally move again, and the next move belongs entirely to Ennis and his team.
