WBO And IBF Join Forces For Joint Convention As Zuffa Boxing Looms

The WBO and IBF will hold a joint convention in Orlando from December 9-13, marking a rare collaboration between two major sanctioning bodies. The move comes as Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing project continues generating discussion about whether boxing could eventually move toward a more centralized championship structure.

The sanctioning bodies have ruled boxing for decades by collecting lucrative sanctioning fees and forcing garbage mandatory defense splits. Dana White coming in with the Zuffa Boxing banner means a real threat to that entire revenue model. He wants a UFC-style structure, one champion per division, zero alphabet titles, and total control over the matchmaking.

What makes this hilarious is how detached the sanctioning bodies are from reality. Leon Panoncillo is out here saying “the belts do matter,” but the Jai Opetaia situation proved the exact opposite. Opetaia happily dropped the IBF cruiserweight strap because Zuffa offered the real money and the massive platform. Fighters do not care about paying 3% of their purse to a sanctioning body when an entity like Zuffa can hand them life-changing paydays and a real promotional engine.

Fans have spent years begging for an end to the endless interim titles, regular titles, and undisputed confusion. While the IBF and WBO view Zuffa as a threat to boxing, the average fan views them as a potential savior who could finally clean up the sport’s corrupt, fragmented landscape.

It is an interesting power struggle. The sanctioning bodies think collaborating with each other will save them, but if Zuffa controls the money and the top talent, those plastic and leather straps won’t be worth the material they are made of.
