Vergil Ortiz Jr. criticized Xander Zayas’ reaction to his stoppage defeat, while the former champion defended his corner’s decision to end the fight
Vergil Ortiz Jr. delivered a brutal assessment of Xander Zayas after Saturday night’s stoppage loss to Jaron “Boots” Ennis, accusing the former unified champion of quitting. Zayas, however, defended his corner’s decision to throw in the towel, saying their job was to protect him.
Xander you looked straight to your corner after you got dropped that last time you’re a pussy you did better than I thought you were gonna do but you’re a quitter I can’t believe I just saw you do that

The comments came only hours after Ennis stopped the previously unbeaten Zayas to become a unified champion in a second weight class. Zayas was dropped in the first, fifth, and seventh rounds before his corner ended the fight following the final knockdown.
Zayas struck a far different tone during his post-fight interview, praising Ennis for the victory and supporting his corner’s decision to stop the contest.
“They’re here to save me,” Zayas said. “They’re here to keep me safe… If they made that decision, it was because it was time.”
Ortiz has repeatedly been linked to a fight with Ennis, and both fighters have expressed interest in facing one another. However, Ennis said after Saturday’s victory that his priority is becoming the undisputed champion at 154 pounds, while promoter Eddie Hearn indicated the remaining world title fights now take precedence over a meeting with Ortiz.
