Tony Bellew Refuses to Retract Daniel Dubois Criticism

Tony Bellew refuses to abandon his belief that Daniel Dubois can be taken to a point where he stops fighting, despite Don Charles arguing that his recovery against Fabio Wardley should have settled the question.

The disagreement became pointed when Charles asked Bellew directly to withdraw the “quitter” label. Bellew expressed discomfort with the word but maintained that Dubois’s previous defeats revealed a limit opponents could expose again.

“When he’s having success, Daniel’s gonna fight for his life. When Daniel’s not having success, he’s got a line,” Bellew said on Fight Your Corner.

That is Bellew’s explanation for Dubois getting up twice against Wardley. He believes the punches Dubois was landing gave him confidence that he could turn the fight around, even after the early knockdowns.

Charles rejected the suggestion that those recoveries failed to answer the criticism. Dubois made the decision to continue, and his trainer believes he deserves credit for it.

“I didn’t get in that ring and gave him a hand up,” Charles said.

The argument also returned to Dubois taking a knee against Joe Joyce with a broken eye socket. Charles defended that decision as protecting his fighter’s future. Bellew cited other boxers who continued with orbital injuries, although their willingness to continue does not establish that Dubois faced the same circumstances or severity of injury.

Charles then stood by his earlier challenge for Bellew to watch his own defeat against Adonis Stevenson before judging Dubois.

Bellew said he remembered none of that fight and credited referee Michael Griffin with saving his life. His position was that the referee intervened because he could no longer defend himself, rather than because he chose to stop.

The relevant question for Wardley is whether he can prevent Dubois from building confidence through his own attacks. Two knockdowns did not accomplish that in their first meeting. Dubois kept finding enough success to believe the fight remained his to win.

Bellew’s theory remains an opinion about another fighter’s thinking. Charles can point to the Wardley victory as evidence of courage, but neither man persuaded the other to change his view.
